The Truth About Lingering Chronic Lyme Disease Symptoms
Sep 03, 2025
So you treated your Lyme disease...
Why do you still have symptoms?
When Lyme disease turns into chronic Lyme disease or Post Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) it can be really frustrating.
We hear stories all the time of people who treated their Lyme disease, felt better for a time and were so ecstatic and happy to have Lyme in their rearview mirror...
Only to wake up one day and have all the symptoms come flooding back.
There is nothing worse than that feeling of being back in that dark place that you worked so hard to finally escape!
But you CAN take back your body and feel like yourself again! Never lose hope!
There are a few different reasons that can be happening and perhaps even a mixture of all of them.
1. Lyme microbes were not killed. (Antibiotic resistance)
This is a story we hear all the time. "I took antibiotics, the Lyme symptoms went away...but then they came back with a vengeance!"
A lot of this is likely due to the fact that Lyme microbes recognize the use of antibiotics and go into "resistance mode" where they hide in an encysted ball shape form.
Then when the antibiotics clear the system, the microbes roll back out to full form and continue doing what they were doing before (surviving, reproducing, penetrating cells, and consuming collagen)
It's important to note that there are many different kinds of bacteria. Stealth microbes and their co-infections are massive in number. If a tick bite happens, there is a high likelihood of co-infections. We are being exposed to a "cocktail" of various bacteria. A cocktail nobody wants.
2. Lyme microbes are not causing the chronic Lyme disease symptoms
Lyme disease symptoms are tricky. They are really just manifestations of an underlying issue. Multiple different issues can lead to overlapping symptoms. Therefore it's not necessary that it is Lyme microbes themselves causing the distress.
For example: Let's say a person says they have Lyme disease and that's why they have bone pain and bone degradation. Then upon further investigation, it seems that they have a leaky gut issue caused by antibiotics that does not allow them to digest and assimilate nutrients such as vitamin D. This leads to bone degradation and achy bones.
So, in this case the person has multiple different issues they're facing.
- They have pain itself in the joints and bones
- Underlying leaky gut that doesn't allow them to get nutrients they need
- Lyme disease infection on top of it.
So which one do we need to solve first? Well, all 3 of course! We can't really fix the problem by just removing the infection.
Another important note is that the infection itself causes damage. The damage that occurs from Lyme can linger on beyond the infection itself.
You can think of it like a car accident.
3. Germ theory vs Holistic theory
The real problem is the thought differences between germ theory and holistic theory.
Germ theory believes that the reason for disease is a specific microbe.
Holistic theory believes that the reason for disease is a multifaceted and complex problem that sometimes includes infections with a specific microbe.
Lyme disease is an infection of a specific microbe. But more often than not there are other underlying issues that are the reason why your body struggles with this specific microbe.
That is why strengthening the immune system, rebuilding from Lyme microbe damage, and improving gut health and function have such a profound impact on Lyme and co-infections.
That is why we created:
